Tomb Raider 2013 PS3 Review

For years Lara Croft has been a video gaming icon. But for a while she was in the dumps and had some bad games during that time. But a reboot of the series was needed. In 2013 Lara Croft got a reboot and boy was it needed and it was very successful.

Plot: Tomb Raider plot here (as well as other things)

In my opinion Tomb Raider 2013 is a great game.

Gameplay: Lara starts out with no weapons, just her wits. As you play you unlock things that will help you survive. You find base camps, here you can unlock upgrades for Lara. As well as "Fast Travel" around the island from base camps (not all of them, some are called Day Camps). Lara has what is called "Survival Instincts." This highlights areas of interest like animals, documents and other things. The game is in 3rd person view with a full 360 degree camera control.
Combat is also important part. Only way sometimes too get too an objective is too go through people. there is not much of a HUD too speak so you can see around rather well. Stealth also plays a part. You could go in guns blazing but you might at times want too thin the herd before starting the fireworks.

Gameplay is solid and a pleasant change for the series. Lara controls well and if you play enough you can do some amazing feats of acrobatics with Lara. Combat is also solid and tough on higher difficulties. You can get killed easily. Stealth is also well done, no stealth meter or some such. Simple and easy too understand.

Weapons and Upgrades: You get 5 weapons too choose from:

Bows: Makeshift, Recurve, Compound and Competition

Pistol: Semi-Auto, Tactical, Magnum

Rifles: WW2 sub-machine gun, assault rifle, Commando Rifle

Shotguns: Trench Gun, Pump-Action, Combat Shotgun

Axes: Pry Axes, Reinforced Axe, Climbing Axe.

Early weapons have only a few upgrades. As you collect parts (or get in game) you can upgrade them more. More damage, zoom and range too aid you in combat.
The way you upgrade your equipment is through the use of salvage. it is a sort of in game currency use for buying upgrades. Each upgrade costs a certain amount for each weapon. You can find salvage in crates, off dead enemies, animals (yeah I know) and lock boxes.

Lara also gets gear like a two-way radio, torch, Climbing Axe, Rope, Fire striker, Lighter and Rope Ascender.

You go through the game you earn XP points too upgrade Lara in 3 areas, Survivor, Hunter and Brawler.
Survivor helps Lara with exploration, looting and traversing terrain.
Hunter helps with ranged weapons.
Brawler helps with health and melee.

The weapon and upgrade system works well. It is up too the player too decide how too advance Lara up the skills tree. While with only 3 areas too focus on, it does help too not focus on one area.

Graphics: This is game is 4 years old. And what I have is the original version without the facelift a re-lease got. But it still looks good. Over the course of the game Lara shows signs of wear and tear. Cuts, scraps and her clothes show wear and tear as well. By the end of the game Lara looks like she went through a war and well she did.

This game has a lot of collectables. It will keep you busy for a while after you've finished. Some contain things about the next game too but mostly about the island the people who were there.

Verdict: The series at the time of this game needed something new. This game did exactly what it was supposed too do. It gave the series new life and a new direction. As I have played the next game as well I can say that it is a wonderful direction. I really do not have a problem with Tomb Raider. I give it an A+.
