Arcana Heart Fanfiction #16: Training Kamui

It is a few days after Ryokos test. Her team is still digging through the mountains of data obtained and Ryoko is studying her own notes (even making more). She decides too run a few errands and takes her notes with her. She sits in a parking lot reading her notes.

*Ryoko mumbles too herself while reading her notes and not paying attention too her surroundings. Kamui sees her and approaches*

Kamui: Hello.
Ryoko: Jesus!!!
Kamui: Oh i'm sorry. Didn't mean scare you.
Ryoko: *sigh* It is okay.
Kamui: What you are doing?
Ryoko: Was doing errands but toke a break too study my notes.
Kamui: Oh..... can I ask you something?
Ryoko: Sure. Anything.
Kamui: *unsure* Can you.... teach me how too drive?
*Ryoko is taken aback by her comment*
Kamui: I'm serious.
Ryoko: o..... okay then.
Kamui: *sad* Perhaps it will help me understand more about your racing career.
Ryoko: Your not driving my car.... but.
Kamui: But what?
Ryoko: Get in Millennial Guardian.

Kamui gets in and they travel back too her house. They enter and go into her 'girl cave.'

Ryoko: *points* take a seat Miss Kamui.
Kamui: *unsure* okay.
*Ryoko fires up her driving simulator and selects a Rally game*
Ryoko: You want too learn, your doing it my way. Pick a discipline Miss Kamui.
Kamui: (Why is she making me chose?) Erm........ (Oh boy I have no idea what too chose) Uh.... Rallycross?
Ryoko: Good.

For the next few hours Ryoko teaches Kamui how too drive. Everything from using a manual stick shift too racing techniques. The cars she uses are easy too drive. Though Kamui crashes a lot because she doesn't know her limits. Ryoko doesn't get frustrated though, she gently guides Kamui through it all.

Kamui: My brain feels like mush.
Ryoko: Well your doing well though.
Kamui: I will admit, this is very interactive. I like the feedback i'm getting.
Ryoko: Okay. Time for a race.
Kamui: *unsure* Uh... a race?
Ryoko: Did I stutter?
Kamui: Well.....
Ryoko: Don't worry. You'll get plenty of practice before so. I'll let you take notes.

Though the game gives 10 practice runs, Kamui uses all 10 practice sessions and takes plenty of notes. After getting her setup how she wants (though she still isn't comfortable). The other racers are set too "Realistic" difficulty. The hardest setting.

Kamui: I'm going too beaten badly aren't I?
Ryoko: *smirk* No pain No gain.
Kamui: *sad* Go easy on me please. I'm new too this.
Ryoko: No quarter shall be given.
Kamui: *sigh*

Kamuis race starts. For the 1st lap she does well. But the AI are being ruthless and racing aggressively.

Kamui: They aren't playing nice.
Ryoko: Casual contact keep going. Don't be afraid too give it back.

Kamui does give it back unsuccessfully but makes head way. By her 2nd lap she is behind everyone else but not by much.

Ryoko: You have too take a "Joker lap" still.
Kamui: Ack! Kinda busy right now!
Ryoko: Just take it when I tell you.

Coming around for her last lap Kamui is battling for 5th place. Swapping paint and the like.

Ryoko: Take the "Joker Lap" here. You'll clear him by miles.
Kamui: Okay.

Kamui does as instructed and is in 5th place comfortably. It is where she finishes.

Kamui: Whew...
Ryoko: Not too bad. Try again?

Kamui can't resist the urge too try again. She takes another 10 practice sessions. Her next race is better but still finishes 5th.

Ryoko: I think you are ready for something different. Hill Climb.
Kamui: *unsure* Oh no...
Ryoko: Ah come on Miss Kamui. Hill Climb is easy. Just you on the course. *smirk* But your car has about 500 horsepower.
Kamui: *sad* Your doing this on purpose aren't you...
Ryoko: Maaaaaaaaaybe.

Kamui choice of cars are from the 1980's. All have 4 Wheel Drive but are fast and powerful.

Ryoko: Pick your car.
Kamui: (Oh my god not again.... she torturing me) The 1986 Audi Quattro?
Ryoko: Good choice. Hill Climb is getting up the mountain course as fast as possible with out falling off. Course is split into 3 separate stages with 3 different surface configurations. You'll start on Tarmac.
Kamui (*Sigh* I had too express interest didn't I?) Is it easier in anyway?
Ryoko: Tarmac has a lot of grip.
Kamui: That is it?
Ryoko: Yep.
*Kamui sighs*

Kamui gets 10 practice sessions like last time. The Audi is a handful being so powerful but unlike the Rallycross cars isn't as responsive and were Front Wheel Drive and didn't have 500 hp. So Kamui works on getting it more responsive (as best she can) and dealing with 4WD system. Ryoko gives her some tips, which help.

Ryoko: Handful isn't it?
Kamui: Putting it lightly...
Ryoko: You drive it, it doesn't drive you. Keep that in mind.

Kamui set off on her first short stage. She obviously cautious but pushes it as far as possible.

Kamui: I feel better that this is on tarmac.
Ryoko: Baby steps Miss Kamui.

Kamui doesn't fall off the course or wreck. She begins too feel more confident. The next go she pushes more, making mistakes but still gaining confidence. Ryoko changes stages on her but Kamui isn't bothered and for the 1st time set a green sector time. Kamui then tackles the final stage. Again setting a green sector time and with limited mistakes.

Ryoko: Okay now too do the whole thing.
Kamui: Huh?
Ryoko: Your doing the whole track. Section 1, 2 and 3.
Kamui: Okay.

Kamui sets up with the best mix of her previous setups (she takes about 30 minutes). When ready Kamui sets off. She does very well but she has too make compromises in her driving and setup. The combined course is much longer which requires Kamui too remain focused for a much longer period of time. She keeps her focus and finishes with a respectable time.

Kamui: *sigh* Whew...
Ryoko: Well done.... next your doing it on dirt. But not today.
Kamui: Okay i'll be ready for your next instruction. (I'm beginning too understand what driving and racing are about.)

A few days pass before Kamui gets her next training. Same course and same car but on dirt. Ryoko explains that dirt has less grip then tarmac. A different setup is required. Instead of being rigid the car must be soft. Kamui has a harder time getting it right. Ryoko helps her out with tips about throttle control and steering input. The practice sessions go okay for the most part, Kamuis biggest complaint is wheel spin.

Ryoko: You will always have some on a surface just as this. Gearing will help but throttle control is most important.

For each section Kamui uses all 10 practice sessions. Her times are slow, mostly because she doesn't feel confident enough too push and do the overall lack of grip. But she does improve with each section.

Kamui: *sad* i'll never get the hang of this.
Ryoko: You better. You have one final test.
Kamui: (Oh no...)
Ryoko: The full track on the traditional mixed surface.
Kamui: (Oh my...)
Ryoko: You best study Miss Kamui. Your final test will be tomorrow.

The next day Kamui returns for her final test. Combing over her notes all night and getting her best setup (after 10,000 times second guessing herself). Ryoko offers Kamui a more realistic experience. Her simulator seat has seat belts. Kamui hooks up and puts on a headset too protect her hearing. And one other thing.

Ryoko: I am not going too help you. You are on your own.
Kamui: (This was bound too happen.)

Ryoko gets Kamui set up and then leaves her be. Kamui already has your notes ready so she setup her car. After about 10 minutes she is ready.

Ryoko: Alright. You get one chance too get it right.

Ryoko exits her room and watches Kamui from her living room TV. The game informs Kamui she has 60 seconds too start, counting down visually on the screen.

Kamui: (Well here we go.)

Kamui sets off. Her senses are assaulted by the sound. During her training the sounds were dulled so Ryoko communicate with her. Now that she is all by herself, Kamui feels everything. She has experienced this before when she stayed overnight at Ryokos house before. But been in the driver seat is a whole lot different. Her eyes too moved rapidly across the screen, scanning for anything that she might hit. Kamui has fought many battles in her life but this too a battle... with herself. She focuses 100% on her task. Her biggest challenge is the change from grippe tarmac too loose gravel. She has too change her driving style accordingly. Roughly halfway through Kamui starts sweating do too amount of strain she is under. At the 3/4 mark she has a mix of green and red sectors but no real mistakes too speak of. She finishes with a respectable time.

Ryoko: How was that?
Kamui: Whew..... Felt great. I'm beginning too understand more and more.
Ryoko: 'Without knowledge, that is not power.'
Kamui: What about real life driving?
Ryoko: One day Millennial Guardian.... one day. You have bigger responsibilities then learning how too drive but in would help you too know and get a license. For future reference of course. I'll instruct you if you want.
Kamui: *smile* I'd like that very much.

Ryoko takes Kamui home. Konoha ask Kamui what she learned she basically boils it down too "You have too trust in yourself. Focus, mental strength and confidence in what you are doing."
