Mirrors Edge is a first person game that involves the use the parkour and free running too let the player control character move seamlessly through the game environment. In the blog i'll compare and contrast the 2 games.
Compare: Setting: Takes place in a utopian city where the government controls and manages just about every aspect of everyday life. The people don't care really. However there are those that use people called Runners too get information physically instead of through digital means. The cops do not care unless they are challenged directly. Runners move the info between clients for payment.
The setting is similar between both the 2008 version and 2016 version. As are the Runners as it the government body that controls and manages everything.
Contrast: Setting: The 2008 version takes place in a city of unknown name and with democratic system of elections, though only 1 or 2 parties have a chance at winning despite many parties running for election. The city itself isn't over imposing on the view through the players eyes. Only a few building rise up very high. The city also seems rather natural and organic feel too it. When on a building looking down at the streets below yes there isn't much in the way of traffic or people. But it does feel natural in some way.
The 2016 version is less so. The city (named Glass) is run by 13 families and there are no political elections at all. The citizens are also treated much differently with a very bias class system in place. You are also required too sign up too the "grid" too be monitored 100% of the time. And if not then you will be put out pasture. The city itself is also very different from the 2008 version. It is very inorganic with moving parts, billboards, news feeds. Glass is very imposing on your view, very rarely will you never have a building right in front of you or in the distance. Yes the street life below is more alive and you can see people inside the builds as you pass by. But Glass still feels very inorganic.
Compare: Faith Conners: Both Faiths from the 2008 and 2016 versions are Runners and both are damn good at it. They are also the same age, height and weight. Both have the signature tattoo on their right eye and arm.
Contrast: Faith Conners: The 2008 version isn't as well fleshed out as the 2016 version. Not too say the 2008 version is blind and boring but we see more of the 2016 versions backstory then the 2008 version. We see some of the 2008 version but not enough. The 2016 also deals her past struggles more.
Compare: Combat: Both the 2008 and 2016 games have combat but that is the limit of the comparison ends.
Contrast: Combat: The 2016 version handles combat so much better. It flows much better and isn't as clunky or difficult. You can vary your attacks and get special cutscenes for finishing enemies. The 2008 version it is noted that you should avoid combat if at all possible. And in some cases you can. The most you can do is disarm your opponents and punch and kick. It isn't smooth but in the 2008 version lets you fire guns at your enemies. Which is needed sometimes because you really have no other choice. The 2016 version you can't fire guns at all.
Contrast: Length: The 2008 version isn't very long but the 2016 version is. There are a lot more extras and Glass is much bigger then the city in the 2008 version.
Contrast: Freedom: Mirrors edge 2008 is rather limited on where you can go. There are different paths from point A too point B but it is rather structured. The 2016 version however gives you much more in the way of freedom too go from point A too point B.
Compare: Both have "runner vision." It highlights things of interest in red too let you know they are important for you too traverse. Also marking your objectives.
Also one more thing: The series didn't need a reboot. EA waited 8 years another crack at it and they went with the reboot option instead. A simple continuation of the 2008 story would have been better.
