How too write Fanfiction (An amateurs view)

As you can tell from this blog, i write fanfiction. As poorly as it is written, i enjoy doing it. The general definition of fanfiction is A fan (whom ever it maybe) take original work of fiction (created by someone else) and make original story from it. Of course it would be best too give credit too the original creator too avoid any complications. In this blog i'll share some advice for writing it. Some is obvious, some is not. But here it goes.

1. Respect canon: Whatever the original creator has made, done, explained etc... respect it. Regardless of how good or bad it is. Respect it. It is their word and hard work. Their word means more then a fans does.

1.5: Do NOT substitute fanon for canon: Fanon is when a fan takes something and too them makes it canon. This is a big no-no. No matter how much I've seen fan argue this, the writer takes precedent over what you have too write.

2. Respect the characters: A story needs too have characters, those characters add too the story and help move it along. Their looks, traits and personalities is something the original writer has given them. I've have seen more times then not someone completely mis-represent a character. Most of it does for hate reasons, which is complete bullshit. Or said person lacks context about said character. Even the most evil, dickish characters deserve respect at least in terms of how the writer has written them.

3. Explore the unexplored: Writers can't always cover every plot point they create. Here a fan has some creativity. A fan can even explore missed chances for the writer too make something happen. I'll use an example. In the Naruto manga there are 2 characters, Naruto (the main character) and Hinata (secondary character) are married and have kids. They have been together since Naruto: The Last movie in which is shows how they got together. I'm fine with them being together, 100% okay with it. But the creator Masashi Kishimoto completely miss a chance too make it happen in his manga. In my fanfcitions, i keep them canonly together but i make it happen sooner (They get together at 18-19 years old, i write them together at 16-17 years old.) I'll avoid going into great detail but i personally think it should have happened then and I'm not alone in thinking that.

4. Create your own character: I've done this. it adds originality too your fanfictions. It also perhaps lets you sort live in the fantasy of the original creator.

5. Don't focus on romance: Unless you have a good ability too pull it off. And I'm not talking smut either. Romance is VERY hard too pull off and it isn't for everyone. Established couples are easy if you know the characters well enough but romance can be very cheesy when not done correctly. I myself focus on character established feelings and go from there. Hand holding, hugging, some kissing and using creative ways of having characters express their feelings for the other.

6. Avoid fights: Writing with words is hard. Using pictures with words (like manga artists do) is much better. It can be done but don't be long winded.

7. Have fun: The whole point of writing fanfiction is too enjoy it. I do despite me sucking at it. Sometimes i crack myself up writing with some of the stuff i write. Enjoy yourself.

8. Knowledge: If you intend on writing fanfiction about a series then you have too have knowledge. Sometimes it would be best too read other fanfiction on a series too get the jest of it. Or watch it or read up on it. Recommend reading or watching it first then look up fanfiction. One more thing, anime has a habit of throwing in "filler" episodes that can twist things. Watcher beware.

9. Practice, Practice, Practice: Yes Allen Iverson has taken over this blog. Yes I'm talking about practice. Practice... a lot. Even if your ideas never see the light of day. Not a game.... practice. I'm talking about practice man. (better stop before i lose it)

Those are my tips for writing fanfiction. Tried too keep it as simple as possible.
